Notes for Robert L. Klawonn

Robert L. Klawonn, 75, longtime Paola resident, died Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, in Life Care Center of Osawatomie.

"Bob," as he was known, was born Feb. 5, 1928, in York, Neb., the son of Lee and Helen Messplay Klawonn.

The family moved to Lincoln, Neb., and then to Raytown, Mo., where they settled for a short time. They moved to Kansas City, Mo., when he was 5. They moved to a farm south of Paola in 1941. He attended Osawatomie schools and graduated in 1947 from Osawatomie High School.

He served in the National Guard for 13 years.

He and Mary Guetterman were married Jan. 20, 1951, in the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Wea. They adopted two children, David and Linda, from Quebec, Canada, in 1955.

Mr. Klawonn farmed and had a dairy until 1974. He was employed by Fluor Corp., Taylor Forge Engineered Systems and Kansas Iron Works, all in the Paola area, for 12 years and then for Havens Steel Co. in Ottawa for four years. He retired from Havens in 1987.

He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Paola.

He enjoyed making large model airplanes, carpentry work, fishing, playing cards, working with puzzles and spending time with his grandchildren. Surviving are his wife, Mary Klawonn of the home; his son, David Klawonn of Paola; his daughter, Linda Hinkle of Hudson, Kan.; a brother, Jack Klawonn of Bradenton, Fla.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The funeral Mass was Monday in Holy Trinity Catholic Church and burial was in Holy Rosary Cemetery in Wea.
